Space Race by Phaedra Hanst

The two countries battling each other in the Space Race were United States and Soviet Union. They wanted to beat each other in many things that had to do with space, specifically sending man to the moon, landing him on the moon, and getting satellites set up in space. For both countries this race would boost up their economies, both wanted to have the name of “sending the first rocket into space” and so on. In my opinion this race wasn’t simply to discover all of these world-changing technologies, it was to see who could discover them first. This only happened though, after the Soviet Union found out that their rockets had the possibility of traveling so far. First, their rockets were simply weapons used in the Cold War. The Space Race had many positive consequences; I think it opened up the world’s horizon on where they could go. If indeed we could find ways to travel to other planets, we could surely find the benefits of each and every one. On the other hand, they were possibly dangerous trips. After the Sputnik was set up, we tried to also send men to outer space, which at that time was not such a good idea, seeing as the technology was not as advanced as it is today. I think that the Space Race continued because people still want to know more about other planets. There are though, two opposing views on this topic, some people want to keep exploring simply because it’s something they love, and others I think want to explore to see what they can use. We are using up all our earth, is the Space Race a search for more resources? I do think that humans should keep venturing into space, who knows what they might find? If indeed these planets are uninhabited, we might be able to use them.
